{"id":166452,"date":"2026-10-15T09:48:11","date_gmt":"2026-10-15T07:48:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/icc.it\/?p=166452"},"modified":"2026-10-15T09:50:38","modified_gmt":"2026-10-15T07:50:38","slug":"automotive-cable-standard-transition-from-iso-6722-to-iso-19642-icc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icc.it\/en\/automotive-cable-standard-transition-from-iso-6722-to-iso-19642-icc\/","title":{"rendered":"AUTOMOTIVE CABLE STANDARD TRANSITION: FROM ISO 6722 TO ISO 19642 ICC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ISO 6722 AND ISO 19642: THE EVOLUTION OF REFERENCE STANDARDS FOR AUTOMOTIVE CABLES<\/strong><\/p><p>In the field of <strong>design and manufacturing of cables for automotive applications<\/strong>, the transition from the long-established <strong>ISO 6722 standard<\/strong> to the more recent<strong> ISO 19642<\/strong> series represents a significant evolution of the international regulatory framework. This update, which is essential to meet the requirements of modern electrical architectures of vehicles, does not necessarily imply discontinuity for products that have already been developed and qualified.<\/p><p><strong>WHAT CHANGES?<\/strong><\/p><p>For many years, ISO 6722 has been the main technical reference for the dimensions, characteristics and testing of <strong>electrical cables intended for road vehicles<\/strong>. Following the withdrawal of its latest editions in 2023 (ISO 6722-1:2011 for copper and ISO 6722-2:2013 for alumin<s>i<\/s>um), the international standards body introduced the ISO 19642 series.<\/p><p>This new series was developed to consolidate, expand and rationalise the existing body of standards. It provides a much more structured approach to terminology, test methods and technical requirements, with clear distinctions between materials, voltage levels and configurations.<\/p><p>The ISO 19642 series include specific references for:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Single-core copper and alumin<u>i<\/u>um cables for systems up to 60 V DC.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Single-core cables for high-voltage applications up to 600 V AC \/ 900 V DC and 1,000 V AC \/ 1,500 V DC (HV systems).<\/strong><\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Multicore cables.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Shielded and unshielded cables.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p><strong>PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS AND CONTINUITY FOR SINGLE-CORE CABLES<\/strong><\/p><p>The transition to the new series reorganises and extends the requirements. However, the withdrawal of ISO 6722 <strong>does not mean that references included in technical specifications or customer requirements automatically lose their technical or contractual validity<\/strong>.<\/p><p>For single-core cables, which form the basis of traditional applications, there is a strong continuity between the two standards families. <strong>Products previously qualified according to ISO 6722 can often provide a valid reference for ISO 19642<\/strong>. In many cases, <strong>the transition to the new standard does not require cable redesign or automatically implies discontinuity with respect to qualifications already obtained.<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>ICC AND THE NEW GENERATION OF AUTOMOTIVE CABLES<\/strong><\/p><p>Next-generation vehicle architectures require increasingly complex solutions, such as multicore and shielded cables, as well as cables designed for high-voltage (HV) applications.<\/p><p>In this rapidly evolving scenario, <strong>ICC supports automotive manufacturers and tier-1 suppliers in the development and supply of advanced cable solutions<\/strong>.
